Education and Sponsorship
The SLWD sponsors various programs around the local schools such as Envirothon, the Ducks Unlimited “Watershed EcoVan”, Water Festival, and scholarship.
Envirothon is a hands-on environmental education competition for high school students, designed to foster an appreciation for current environmental issues, encourage team work, and public speaking skills. Envirothon also uses knowledge in hands-on activities. This approach to environmental education helps students develop skills necessary to address environmental issues. The first place Manitoba team that wins the competition goes on to represent the province at the National level held at a predetermined location within North America.
The Ducks Unlimited Wetland EcoVan is another learning tool catered to youth. For groups that are not able to make it to Oak Hammock Marsh, the interpretive center's EcoVan will come to them with a variety of interactive, curriculum-based education programs. At every stop, nature interpreters educate students with hands-on materials on the importance of preserving our environment for the future.
The SLWD hosts an annual Water Festival at the Duck Mountain Interpretive Center where approximately 200 Grade 4 and 5 students gather from around the Swan Valley to learn about the environment. The goal of the Water Festival is to encourage students to get out into the living classroom and learn interactively about their natural environment. Students travel around to different stations such as tree identification, outdoor safety, flint knapping, critter dipping, stream table, Swan Lake Watershed model, animal/fur identification, and various environmental games. The Water Festival engages and educates students on water, fish and aquatic ecosystems which gives the students a greater awareness and encourages them to become good stewards of these resources and relay this message to other individuals.
An huge Thank You to all the various partnerships around the Swan Valley that make this annual event so successful!
Starting new for 2019 is a scholarship opportunity for a current graduating or previous-year graduated high school student pursuing post-secondary education in the coming school year in the field of environmental studies. This $1,000 scholarship is made possible by the generous sponsors, Joe and Mary Jane Eichler, and administered by the Swan Lake Watershed District.
2019 was the first year that two awards were given to graduating students (pictures below in the gallery).
The SLWD also hosts a Watershed District tour showcasing past years projects, giving the sub-districts and other members an idea of what kinds of projects have been completed, the successes of these projects, and the benefits that have been ensued.
